FYI: Even monkey boys apparently like trucks...
Anybody see any problems with how this study may have been constructed in the first place?? How about the fact that in some human cultures, cooking--rather like barbeque in the U.S.--is gendered as a primarily "male" activity? Somehow, I don't think that means that Americans are evolutionarily closer to monkeys! :-) "Some 25 million years ago, humans and vervet monkeys diverged from a common ancestor. In very rough terms, perhaps one and a quarter million human generations, or five million vervet generations, have been brought forth upon the Earth since that common ancestor lived. Of course, many differences have evolved between humans and vervets in those 25 million years: among other things, human parents choose toys for their children; vervet parents do not. But after all that time and genetic change, and despite studies attributing human children's toy preferences to adult stereotypes, a new study by Dr. Gerianne Alexander finds that vervet males, like human boys, prefer toy trucks and balls, while vervet females and human girls prefer dolls and toy cooking pots. What's more, the vervets play with the toys much as human children do: males roll trucks on the ground, females inspect dolls (apparently) for genitalia." (More from MetaFilter)

TAKE-HOME FINAL ESSAY EXAM QUESTION!
INSTRUCTIONS:Answer the following question in essay format (with an analytical thesis statement, arguments to prove that statement, and primary source evidence to back up your arguments!)The exam is "open books" and "open notes."BE SURE TO UTILIZE BOTH PRIMARY and SECONDARY SOURCES IN YOUR RESPONSES!Please limit your essays to 3-5 pages. (Don't forget also to proofread, or you risk losing points!)Your essays are due in by the in-class final, Wednesday, Dec. 14!(BTW, don't get so caught up in preparing the take-home section of the final exam that you neglect preparing also for the in-class section, since they're weighted equally!!)One of the points we have attempted to drive home over the course of this semester is that gender ideals, gender conventions, gender constructions and/or gender identities* are not universal. They change over time and from one society to another, depending on differences in economic, social, or other conditions in their particular historical context. (Note: they can even change from one class to another within the same society for the same reason!!)How and why have the gender conventions, gender ideals, gender conventions and/or gender identities of middle- and upper-class men and women changed in North America between the colonial period and the twenty-first century?*Definitions on A History of Gender in America, p. xix.

"THE MODERN RULES OF ADVERTISING. Men are tired of their portrayal in advertising, according to a new book by Michael Buerk. But images of men behaving stupidly is not the only cliche which irritates John Camm. Writer John Camm has drawn up a list of seemingly unwritten rules of advertising which, he concludes, might as well be the Advertising Bible. Some examples: Men are obsessed with sex but will forego sex in order to watch football or drink beer. Women are locked in a constant battle with their weight/body shape/hairstyle. Married men will flirt with other, younger women but never act upon it. Scandinavians are, without exception, blonde and beautiful. Any over-the-counter medical product will work instantly and 100% effectively." (from The Presurfer)

TAKE-HOME MIDTERM ESSAY EXAM!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer the following two questions in essay format (with an analytical thesis statement, arguments to prove that statement, and primary source evidence to back up your arguments!).
The exam is "open books" and "open notes." BE SURE TO UTILIZE PRIMARY SOURCES IN YOUR RESPONSES! Please limit your essays to 3-5 pages for each question. (Don't forget to proofread, or you risk losing points!)
Your essays are due in class by Monday, Oct. 24th!
1) We have read several legal codes as important primary sources for gender in ancient society. What are the methological problems associated with using law codes as historical sources, and how can you try to attempt to control for these problems?
Given that, compare and contrast a) Hammurabi's Code or the Israelite Laws; b) the Twelve Tables or the Institutes; c) Justinian's Corpus Iuris Civilis or the laws of the Salian Franks. Be sure to not just list similarities and differences, but to develop a hypothesis about what different standards these different civilizations might seem to have developed about women's legal rights, and why.
2) The ancient Greek medical ideas about women had a long influence on gender relations in Western Civilization.
How did the ancient Greeks justify medically or biologically women's lesser public participation in their society? Compare and contrast their views with those hundreds of years later during the European Middle Ages. In what ways and why (or why not?) do ancient Greek ideas seem to continue to influence medieval European conceptions of women?

Rome & Shock-Value
Just a quick note: While the gender, religious and social class issues are handled pretty well in the series "Rome," I thought that scandalous sex scenes were going to be rare in this show, but turns out they're not really rare enough! (I'm not entirelyl certain how historically accurate they all are, but I suppose it's good for ratings, at least...) Be aware that there seem to be every week now scenes that are definitely "rated R," if that's something you'd prefer to avoid... I will be offering other opportunities for extra-credit, so nobody's required to watch if they don't want!Just an FYI!!Enjoy the remainder of your holiday weekend!Dr. Laughran
